As the pandemic wreaks havoc on the Indian and the global economy. Although, it has affected some sectors worse than other sectors, every sector has been affected by it in some way. Co-existing with Covid-19 pandemic has given rise to some major e-commerce trends in the economy that have shaped the larger market to a great extent. These e-commerce trends are here to stay.

Here, are some the major e-commerce trends in India that have emerged during Covid-19.

 1. E-Retail business growth

The E-retail business of India is growing and is predicted to grow to 300-350 million consumers in the next four to five years. Since, the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country in the early 2020s  and the surging cases caused nation-wide lockdown, causing the population to be at home. This was the initial blow that the retail industry faced. The pandemic weakened the traditional sales channel.  Therefore, the retail businesses have built a comprehensive online presence to boost the country’s e-commerce. The  rapid switch to online platforms by the retail businesses have cushioned the pandemic’s blow to this developing e-commerce industry. Essential goods retailers have ventured into tier-2 & tier-3 cities for growth opportunities as they continue to lead the demand.

2. Digital Marketing

E-commerce and all e-businesses are heavily dependent on  marketing their product or services and building an online presence. However, to accomplish this e-commerce brands and businesses heavily depend on digital marketing. Digital marketing involves brands to decide their optimal split of spending  across digital mediums and digital channels. The most significant prospect of the  digital market is targeted advertisements & the ability to hyper personalise. The e-commerce  brands can get better Return on Investment  by being quick to identify customer interests and needs. Effective digital marketing is key to the success of any e-commerce business. The Covid-19 pandemic has caused a shift to the e-commerce platforms from traditional businesses. This in turn made digital marketing of goods and services a peaking e-commerce trend, for years to continue.

3. Improvement of D2C channels

D2C or direct to consumer channels are supply channels which reach the consumer directly, bypassing intermediaries. As e-commerce has heavily depended on D2C channels the lockdowns and curbs ensued by Covid-19  had posed a major challenge to the transport of goods via. the traditional, offline supply channels. E-commerce brands building direct consumer channels have been a very noticeable e-commerce trend.

4. Growth Of Digital Wallets

As the pandemic continues, and more people accept the “new normal” , contactless payment has become a better way to transact. E-commerce trends clearly highlight that more people are shifting to online modes of payment, which has surged the demand of digital wallets like BHIM UPI, Google pay, Paytm and Amazon pay. Alternatively, digital wallets not only provide safer options in the pandemic but, it also offers transaction history which allows consumers to track and manage their funds better.

5. Customization of Packaging

The e-commerce brands have taken maximum precaution to ensure maximum hygiene in packaging. However, e-commerce companies are using it as an opportunity to capture the attention of  their customers with unique packaging. Maintaining sanitation, aesthetics and durability  are the key aspects in which e-commerce businesses are working to hold on to their customers and attract more prospective customers. Post Covid-19 this has been a major e-commerce trend.
