Leadership Lessons that we can learn from House of Cards

Nowadays, we all are hooked with the TV series and enjoy watching them in a marathon run, episode by episode, series by series. Globally, Games of Thrones has taken all of us by storm and made us all go gaga over it with each subsequent season. From this TV series that we love to watch with our friends and family, there is one particular series, that few of us are aware of and the name of the series is “House of Cards”.

The show revolves around a never-ending race for power and its main character “Frank Underwood” who has a thirst for US presidency and for that he takes shrewd and calculative steps to ascend to the oval office. Now, many of us think that Frank Underwood is a villainous character but know of us will deny the fact that he is a true leader and has those leadership skills which always pulls him back from difficult situations. Now following are the leadership lessons that we can learn from the show:

Never Leave Your Team:

Now we all know about the show and it’s two main characters i.e. Frank and Claire Underwood. These two characters are alter egos with equally strong characters and they hold a love-hate relationship throughout the show. Now, these two characters are equally strong and can achieve great things individually but for the fact, they know it that together they are much stronger than acting on their own. Thus, a good leader should always have a trust in his/her team and never leave their side despite any heated arguments or fight. Because in the end, your team will lead you to achieve your end result.

Build a network that works for you:

Underwood very well knows the field on which he is playing on, and as result, he only invests his time on the people who can help him achieve his goals. He never wastes his time on people who are useless for him and thereby he immediately removes them and focuses on his end goal. It doesn’t mean that you have to sack all your employees and subordinates, it just means that you work on your network keeping in mind your end goal.

Understand peoples strength and motivation:

Now, this is the point where Frank Underwood is really good at. He very well knows the strengths and weaknesses of the people working with him and uses that intel to benefit himself by motivating each of them individually. By doing so he knows always holds an upper hand over his competitors and he thus defeats them. Now, in business too, knowing the strength and weaknesses of the surrounding is really important and by knowing so you can leverage from a potential opportunity coming your way.

Always have a Plan B:

Underwood is known for one thing and that is he always keeps a Plan B in case everything goes wrong. Underwood has also made a statement that “If you don’t like how the table is set, turn the table over”. Any leader should have a plan B ready with him, and to do so it requires a great skill, diplomacy, and influence. Underwood is effective as result of his command over manipulation.

Be Problem Solver:

Frank Underwood never wastes much of a time feeling bad about any setback coming his way. In a perfect display of this crucial ability of a leader to find solutions instead of complaining about problems, when his party’s leadership refuses to back him for running for presidency in 2016, he turns the tables by dropping his immediate demand and focusing all his energy on an ambitious plan to create jobs for every American. By this event from the show, we can get an idea about the leader frank underwood and how he solves the problem.
